Welcome to AP's FFXIV Forum

Dear Friends and Family and Fellow Slackers!

Welcome to the new version of the AP forums, dedicated entirely to FFXIV. As many of you know, the game will be released sometime in 2010 and there are already plans to do the beta together, this will be the place coordinate our efforts meetings etc.

We wanted to keep the FFXI portion of the website alive, so that any of us who still play the game and wishes to use the old forums may continue to do so.

FFIV beta is PC Only

For those of you holding fast to the hope that you'll get your hands on Square Enix's next MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, before the game's eventual release, it appears as though you'll need to get your hands on a Windows PC first. In a recent interview with Game Watch, FFXIV director Hiromichi Tanaka said the game's beta release will be on PC only.

Starting with a closed population of 10,000 people and eventually opening up to the public, the beta could be running at full capacity by as early as Summer 2010, according to Tanaka.

*** RACES ***

Hyuran
Most prolific race in Eorzea. They migrated from nearest islands and continents, taken with them their technology. The Hyurans are split up into two big groups according to their geographic localisation: inhabitants from low-lands and high-lands. Their cultures and languages are numerous.

Elzen
This race is native from Eorzea. They clashed with the Hyuran after the latter's massive migration. Their auditory ability is noteworthy.

Roegadyn
Most live in the northern sea on fishing. Some of them are hired as mercenaries or bodyguards by other races, but the other ones prefer to go towards the sea and choose to become pirates.

Lalafell
This race of farmers is above all settled near the southern sea. The Lalafells may appear to be small but their intelligence is superior to the other races. It seems there aren't many women.

Miqo'te
This minority race in Eorzea splits up into two big groups: sun seekers and moon guardians. Most of them are dreadful hunters. Men are extremely rare.

Differences between races is rather minor but differences between genders will be more important.

Character Customization will be more complete: possibility to change face, skin, color of eyes and hair, etc

*** AREAS ***

In the region of Eorzea, there're three big towns: Uldaha in the desert, Gridania in the forest, and Rimsa-Rominsa in the seaside. There're pirates in the latter one. Developers promise to give a story to each inhabitant of these towns. Money is gils.

*** TIME/WEATHER ***

Weather changes.
Day-Night cycle.
1 day Eorzea = 1 hour Earth

*** GAME SYSTEM ***

Game system is named "Armory System", it depends on character's equipment. To change play style, you need to change equipment parts: this modification is executed in real time.

For example, if you're invited to join a team of warriors to fight the enemies, you only need to wear the corresponding equipment to be ready. Once the party disbanded, you only need to change equipment to come back as a crafter, fisherman, etc.

This freedom will make the solo play easier since a warrior who wants to be cured can change into a healer himself. Thereof the number of inventory's slots is more important than FFXI. The developers thought about an easier way to change equipment.

To get more powerful in each specifications, it is advised to balance out the equipment parts between them. In FFXIV, the equipment's level is essential, even more than the character's level itself. The developers insist once again on the huge freedom of this system wherer change can be made whenever. That's probably why the name of the jobs are more neutral than FFXI. The game's team has deliberately chosen to avoid the usual job class.

*** BATTLE ***

Fights are in real-time although te developers point out they won't be the "action" type.
In FFXIV, fights won't be only target and engage the enemy! You'll need to think to other parameters but no more details yet. (the magical barrier in the trailer?)

The items' resistance will be reduced through their use.

*** GUILDS & MISSIONS ***

In FFXIV, guilds delivers licences/permits to players. These illustrated (and beautiful?) cards match with the missions the character has to fulfill. The players will be able to share these permits (having the card or not) and even decide on the number of persons who can participate to the mission.

The game will be irrevelant to the level of each players but some permits can't be obtained before a definite level. These tasks would take 30min~ to be fulfilled, even if some of them will be shorter. Of course, you can carry several permits at the same time.

Those missions will have different and various goals: monster hunting, enemies' raid, skill ups... These operations are called "etherites" (?) and will allow you to be instantly teleported to the specified area.

The new names for Races in FFXIV

The following was found on BGForums, posted by user Seph. So thanks to him! I've grabbed copies and uploaded them here in case the original hosting site goes boom from overload. Keep in mind that these are from Japan so the names may change it's form/spelling/sound etc by the time it reaches US, though I do love some of the new names and very much the new looks.

Updates to article - will be posting updates up top so people can just check in.

- Looks like they're introducing 4 base classes categories, with two additional categories under each right now and then there is some type of "Armory" system to further expand them. The images that correspond with each class has been updated to reflect this.

- The 4 introduced base classes and it's offshoot are:
Notes: keep in mind that these are sneak previews of things that will be in FFXIV, I highly doubt that these are all the classes that's going to be there. But I think they're being used as examples and really gives a clearer idea of what it means by 'switching weapons' if you dont know what I'm talking about you need to watch the E3/Famitsu DVD video I linked to several posts down.

Fighter Swordsman
Archer
Sorcerer Shaman
Illusionist
Gatherer Gardener
Fisherman
Crafter Blacksmiths
Cooks

- Changing classes - this next bit here is based on really rough translation and as I mentioned, I will post the detailed translation or actually a link to ElmerThePointy's large article when he has written it, because I'm sure he's already working on it. But in the meantime something for you to chew one... to change between these categories/classes, basically you'd switch weapons, for example for Crafters - wield a hammer to do certain things. For Fighters wielding I'm guessing (personal guess based on name translation) if you wield a meelee range weapons then you're in swordsman type class and if you wield a ranged weapon you're more an archer. For gatherers is the same, wielding a fishing pole and sickle means obvious things. Well I think that's all we can gather from these images for now, in a few weeks time is Gamescom and we should have more then! Will post JPButton's article when it's up. Enjoy and speculate away!

Further translations from Vivid:
The text under the Sorcerer image has subtle differences. To quote her: they're both mages obviously but the first one has the kanji for curse or charm is in the first one, and the second one i'm probably safe to say is illusionist

The texts under the Fighter image also has two different tags, To quote her: fighter has sword user and bow user under it

TaruTaru - will be known as Lalafell (or as Vargy says... Falafel... -_- yay we're yet another form of food, as if the Taru Sake isnt enough!)

FFXIV version of Taru - Lalafell

Galka - Will be known as Roegadyn

Group Shot
The following are a comprehensive shot at all the races that we current have in FFXI and it's counterpart in FFXIV. There has been no new name released yet for Elvaans

The text that came with this picture has been translated in Seph's post but I'll post an update if another one comes that has more details:

Translation for this picture : "When you make your character, aside from choosing the race, you will also be able to customize their appearance. Head, skin color, hair type etc, there will be multiple factors. Just how exact we will be able to customize their appearance is still unknown, but we mean it in a good way when we say that it seems like it will become a worry to many players
